What is the best strategy in an interview process?

December 23rd, 2009 · 5 Comments · Interview Strategies

Tell the employer that i will go with the best offer? tell the employer that i will go with the nice offer and a good boss? I see that employers are more likely to follow through if they feel that they have some way of controling the offer. They also fear rejection. So, how can i make the employer feel secure? By letting them know directly that whoever makes the best offer wins, so that they can control by making the best offer. But this does not work, if the company is small and i dont want the employer to feel left out. Should i make them feel that if they are nice bosses, and they make a good job, i can also go with that.

You need to change your strategy as it sounds like the choice is yours rather than the employers to make whether you land the job. Your statement "they also fear rejection" is one of the reasons why employers are so fearful of employing people who are not committed to the position they apply for. We are so fortunate in Singapore to be spoilt for choice that demand exceeds supply when it comes to job placement. I assume that you are young and perhaps not serious about obtaining a steady job because all you need to do is ask someone who has been laid off or retired before his time and he would have the best strategy or at least have researched the best methods for an interview to be gainfully employed again.

    Be truthful.
    Make eye contact.
Ask questions. It gives you an opportunity to find out more about the assignment in advance and a chance to refuse before the final decision.
Do your homework on the company first. So that you are not wasting your time and theirs.

If you are the best person for the job they will step up to the plate. Knowing that there is competition.

    Good Luck!

Telling them that you have many choices and will "go with the best offer" or "go with the nice offer and a good boss" will be perceived as cockiness. They want you to want this job. They realize that if you’re strong enough, you have other opportunities, but bragging about them does not go over big. Let them know you’re interested in the job, and want to work there–if you do. Don’t take any job just because it’s the best offer or because you like the boss.

I sincerely doubt that you have numerous offers on the table at the same time. So, what you’re really trying to do is get a single, good offer. They know that as well as you do. So, be honest with yourself and them. Don’t try to manipulate the process–you will be perceived as the kind of person who always works the angles rather than putting the effort into doing the job. And, employers want people who work at the job–not people who work the angles.

Forget everything you have just written. No employer would be fooled for a moment by your inane strageies. Start by just trying to show them that you have the skills to do the work (eg bring along your certificates), and that you want the job.

ALWAYS!! Smile and be pleasant. Show the employer that u r confident in yourself and the skills u have to offer. This can be a very important factor in your salary as well. In an interview u are selling yourself to the employer and they want to see that u are "worthy" of the offer at hand. Money is not always the biggest factor in getting a job. On the job chemistry is very important too. "Feel out" your employer is this someone u can see yourself working for/with and being happy in this position. If the salary is not what u desire is there room for growth to gain the salary u desire? These r just a few things u should think about. Good luck:-)
