What strategy should I use for my interview?
I have been a civil rights advocate for the past few years and an attorney for the past year (I passed the bar exam on my first try a few years ago, but only recently got sworn in). I have an interview lined up for a Deputy District Attorney position.
It’s been six years since I have done an interview, but I am confident that I will be able to prepare for the standard interview questions (strengths, weaknesses, where do you see yourself in five years, etc.). I plan to brush up on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Evidence as well.
Other than that, what can I do to prepare? What are they looking for? Should I say that I want the job because I want courtroom experience? Or should I say I want to lock up the thugs and throw away the key? In all honesty, I am a liberal at heart (I also have an interview lined up with the public defender’s office). I know that I will do just as good a job in the DA’s office as I would at the PD’s. I would be equally happy with either position even though I am more philosophically alligned with the PD’s office.
I’m looking for strategy here. What should be my angle? What should I down-play? Should I mention the interview with the PD’s office? What if they ask? Should I tell them that I am opposed to the death penalty and that I would rather avoid those cases? Or should I express my enthusiasm for aggressively representing my client.
I am not asking a question about ethics or morals. Please don’t respond that lawyers (or liberals for that matter) are snakes, or rats, or sharks, or any other animal. My profession is noble and my career ambitions are worthwhile. This is not a legal question and does not belong in the legal forum. This is simply an issue of strategy. Thanks for your help.
